It's one of those sayings, depending upon the inflection or tone of voice, it can mean oh so many things. But, in this case, it is very literally, true. I am lucky enough to know some extremely knowledgeable horsemen, and they have been kind enough, over the years, to share their knowledge and ideas with me. They have also been willing, within reason, limits, and boundaries as I could hear Cesar the dog whisperer say, to be a resource for me when I come up against a problem that requires more 'whatever' than I have. Such was the case a few weeks ago when I called my friend and said, So, what do you do with your young horses that have 'sticky' stifles? Without hesitation he mentioned a specific shoe that he uses and without even stopping to take a breath, said, I'll send you a pair. I just need to know your horses size. Outline his hoof, put it on a scanner, and send it to me, I'll get the shoes right out to you. I needed a spatula to get my mouth off the floor. All I was hoping for was a little advise, a nudge in the right direction. I got so, so much more. Fortunately Howie's farrier is the kind of guy that is willing to try new things and was not offended that I went out looking for help for my horse. Now these shoes are not the normal 'treatment' for Howie's problem, but Howie isn't exactly normal either. And with my friend's track record, I'd bet on him. So I'm happy to report that so far, after one week, Howie is doing better. We just had our best lesson ever, he was cantering not running, and he was jumping the moon! I think I'm ordering another pair of the magic shoes, and saying a very special thank you to 'the guru'.
